The VEX IQ Experience
What Is VEX IQ Robotics?
VEX IQ robotics classes for elementary and middle school students. Teams design robots, write autonomous code, and compete in official tournaments. GRD Talents coaches the full season in Colonia, serving Edison, Woodbridge, and Middlesex County.
Teamwork Challenge
Two robots collaborate on a 60-second alliance match to score maximum game points. Students practice communication, strategic positioning, and rapid driver handoffs.
Autonomous Coding
Code the robot to score points entirely autonomously in a 60-second programming run using internal motor encoders, inertial gyros, and distance sensors.
Mechanical Engineering
Design custom drivetrains (4-wheel drive, omni-directional), gear ratios for torque vs. speed, motorized intakes, elevators, and pneumatic or passive release mechanisms.
Engineering Notebook
Document the engineering design process from brainstorming to testing and CAD sketching. Judges evaluate notebooks at tournaments for prestigious awards.
Lab Hardware
Official VEX IQ 2nd Generation Technology
Every student team works directly with cutting-edge VEX Robotics kits and equipment.
VEX IQ 2nd Gen Robot Brain
Featuring a full-color LCD screen, built-in inertial sensor (6-axis gyro & accelerometer), 12 smart ports, high-speed Bluetooth coding, and dual processor performance.
Smart Motors with Encoders
High-precision smart motors tracking velocity, rotational degrees, position, and torque in real time, allowing millimeter-accurate autonomous navigation.
Optical & Distance Sensors
Color and optical sensors detecting game element colors, ambient light, and distance measurements up to 2 meters for obstacle detection and auto-alignment.
Wireless Game Controller
Ergonomic dual-joystick controller with low-latency 2.4GHz radio. Students program custom button mappings, arcade drive, tank drive, and automated motor presets.
VEXcode: Blocks to Python
Students start with intuitive drag-and-drop block coding and seamlessly transition to text-based Python programming to build advanced control loops and PID controllers.
Regulation 6' x 8' Arena
Practice on the exact regulation field perimeter and official game challenge elements used in regional, state, and world championship events.
Curriculum
VEX Robotics Season Syllabus
A structured, competition-proven curriculum designed to build both technical engineering skills and tournament confidence.
- Phase 1: Drivetrain Architecture & Center of Gravity — 2-wheel vs 4-wheel drive bases, omni-wheels for sharp turns, gear reductions for high pushing torque, and structural rigidity.
- Phase 2: Manipulator Mechanisms & Intakes — Motorized roller intakes, 4-bar and 6-bar linkage arms, catapults, and flywheel launch mechanisms engineered for annual game scoring.
- Phase 3: Controller Programming & Driver Ergonomics — Arcade vs. tank control algorithms, trigger deadzones, precision slow-mode toggles, and driver-partner coordination.
- Phase 4: Autonomous Navigation & Gyro Sensor Coding — VEXcode programming with the integrated inertial sensor for pinpoint 90-degree turns and repeatable autonomous routines.
- Phase 5: Strategy, Defense & Alliance Collaboration — Match cycle times, scoring path optimization, tournament scouting, and effective communication with alliance partners.
- Phase 6: Engineering Notebook & Tournament Scrimmages — Engineering notebook reviews, judge interview practice, simulated match pressure, and tournament readiness.
